Welcome to my party!

Over at 5 Minutes for Momthe gals are hosting a blog party for us Moms! Woohoo!

We all love a great party right?

So welcome, take off your shoes or boots, there are hand-knit slippers in the box by the door just because I knew you were coming. Would you like a cup of tea? Can I offer you a piece of carrot cake tonight?or some chocolate? My personal fav tea is peppermint and as I blog I am often drinking the stuff! Do you want the comfy chair or should we sit at the table and chat.

Thanks for coming by my newest adventure. I have a hobby that I  love that I would love to share with you. It is contesting! Do you love a giveaway or prize or freebie? I  do! I also love the word FREE. I never enter a contest that costs me money to enter. So far I have had alot of cool wins. I believe I am a lucky cannuck! I enter contests where I really want the win only. This week was a win in the Quest for the Lindt Gold Bunny. I love chocolate! This contest was and is only open to Canadians…go and play and see if you too win a tin of chocolate or maybe that trip to Europe! Talking of great prizes have you seen all the prizes you can win participating in this party??

My personal favorites aren’t open to us Cannucks but are:

1.Kristin at An Ordinary Life is giving away $23 to your paypal acct to celebrate her birthday (#55)

2. A new blog design by Sweet Simple Design. I could of so used this one for this blog here!(#24)

3. A 6 week fitness plan by Go Workout Mom. I am trying to lose weight so this one is another that would of been great for me.

Now for those few that are open to us Canadians

I would really love to win the tea set that Alyson is offering!! I also like the lamb photo frame that Amydeanne is offering.

Now if you are a Canadian visiting and you want to contest well I really recommend two sites Contest Girl and Frugal Shopper and the forums there.

Well hope that you enjoyed your visit…come back soon!

Yesterday Vinay Menon wrote a review of the documentary about Contesting that was on CBC last night. I really think calling us that enter as a hobby freaks or encouraging the use of swear words was a bit much.

Let me tell you why I enter contests: I am a solo parent of one child who lives in Canada’s largest city on $1240 a month? Could you do that and NOT look for the freebies and contests that provide fun for us?

I enter contests that I  really want to win only. I do not enter every contest. For me I like experience, movie passes, Canadian travel, computer, and cash contests. I also like books! For me a single parent it is how I am able to give my daughter experiences like any other child.

Last year our wins included a Keith urban concert, movie passes, ROM passes, Casa Loma passes, CNE passes, music downloads, restaurant Gift certificates, and books. All the prizes were small but very useful for this lucky mom.

Contesting for me does not take away from our family life it enhances it. My daughter likes the writing contests…you know the ones where you have to do something to win, as they make her think. Now she hasn’t won one yet but it does get her thinking (one example of this was the Habitat for Humanity writing contest last fall). So some may call us freaks, I will call us smart, wise, and lucky!

Recently I have been trying to improve my health so I was thankful for a certain freebie: a book called “Live Well, A Woman’s Guide to Optimum Health”.  It talks about the things that do concern us Cannucks. Here is the link. Let me know what you think.

Sometimes people think I am a wee bit off my rocker. Why? Because I search out the FREEBIE, the less expensive route. Some people would rather spend more or not fill out that ballot because there thought is you are what you pay for. Well I am the exact opposite in thought. I Love my wins and freebies. For me it has allowed me to try new things, be the first to see a movie, read books before they are released, try new products,  do things and go places without spending a dollar. Does that make me off my rocker? No it makes me smart and lucky…blessed some would say!

For the past number of days I have been following a friend who has been blogging from Africa about Compassion’s work over there. The pictures and videos spoke to my heart and my daughters as well . We see how very lucky we are. How even though by Canadian standards we are considered poor by many we are actually very wealthy by world standards. We made a commitment to sponsor a child…her name is Chelsea and she is now part of our family! For the cost of a can of diet coke or a cup of coffee and a muffin a day you could really help a child and their family become self sufficient… I couldn’t help but think of something that was recently by a very wise man.. “we live in a knowledge based world, and the best way to become self sufficient is through eduction”…so my hats and prayers are with the bloggers who went…they really showed us how blessed and lucky we are! We really are we can contest, blog, eat when we want and have health care to name just a few blessings of Canadian life …I am a lucky cannuck and I want to share what I have been blessed with.

In the March issue of O Magazine there is a great article “5 Things Happy People Do”. It got me thinking you really need to be happy to have the luck..Attitude, happiness joy and luck all go hand in hand. They are the necessities for a winning life so what do happy people do?

1. They find their authentic self- they picture JOY!

2. They design their lives to bring in joy. They plan for joy! They do the things they love to do, things that excite them.

3.They don’t dwell on the “if only”…You know if only I lost the twenty pounds, got the better job, got that certain win then life would be grand thinking. You got to be content and thankful for all you have–it is part in parcel of having real happiness and luck.

4. They take care of their friends..friendship is an important part of life. I know I treasure the time that I get to hang with friends.

5. They allow themselves to be happy! Some people are always thinking I will be happy when I get this project or that done. I love this quote from the article.

“”Some people would say you shouldn’t strive for personal happiness until you’ve taken care of everyone in the world who is starving or doesn’t have adequate medical care,” says Howard Cutler, MD, coauthor with the Dalai Lama of The Art of Happiness in a Troubled World. “The Dalai Lama believes you should pursue both simultaneously. For one thing, there is clear research showing that happy people tend to be more open to helping others. They also make better spouses and parents.” And in one famous study, nuns whose autobiographies expressed positive emotions (such as gratitude and optimism) lived seven to 10-and-a-half years longer than other nuns. So, for any die-hard pessimist who still needs persuading, just think of how much more you can help the world if you allow a little happiness into your life. ”

I really do believe the more happiness that I have in my life equates to the more lucky I am. I can not have luck if I am not at that happy place. One can never be too happy or too lucky ! So here is wishing you happiness and luck!

I have been very blessed and am lucky because I get to be mom to this great girl and that makes me very happy this Valentine’s Day! I may be flying solo when it comes to parenting but she makes it so worth it!

May you be as lucky this Valentine’s Day!

Okay I love to enter contests! But my time is very limited for this hobby of mine. So how do I do it, and still get in at least a few wins each month? First I need to let you know I prioritize. I don’t enter every contest that I could just because. First it has to be for something I want to WIN. I then enter local contests first, then national ones, I rarely go and enter international ones unless it is something I really want like that trip to Disney!

Now how am I able to enter the about 75-100 contests that I enter on a daily basis online? Roboform and Contest Girl . First I downloaded Roboform form and use it instead of having to enter my information manually saving me seconds at each site. Then I visit  one of my favorite sites Contest Girl. By registering there you can use the My Contest section to keep track of what you are entering. I like it alot. Right now I have about 60 contests that I am entering on a daily basis, and then there are my one time or weekly entries.

By using these tools I really do feel like a lucky cannuck just waiting for my wins to come in. Now I am off to visit Don’t Try this at Home to see what works for everyone else.

So with this week Valentine’s Day, you can’t help but think of love. For us singles it can be a hard week!  For me I have been in love or in significant relationships 4 times in my life. Each relationship taught me much about that person but more about myself. I am thankful for each of them now as I look back. Right now there isn’t a significant other in my life but I am still surronded by love. I think those of us who are single can look around and see how lucky we are really in the realms of love. I have the love of a wonderful daughter that my Heavenly Father blessed me with. I am lucky to have good friends that I love dearly. I have a great sister and mom that i love too and I know they love me. I have an extended family that I do love as well…all we have to do is look and we can see the love around us. For me I find that makes me one lucky girl this Valentine’s Day.
