Yesterday Vinay Menon wrote a review of the documentary about Contesting that was on CBC last night. I really think calling us that enter as a hobby freaks or encouraging the use of swear words was a bit much.

Let me tell you why I enter contests: I am a solo parent of one child who lives in Canada’s largest city on $1240 a month? Could you do that and NOT look for the freebies and contests that provide fun for us?

I enter contests that I  really want to win only. I do not enter every contest. For me I like experience, movie passes, Canadian travel, computer, and cash contests. I also like books! For me a single parent it is how I am able to give my daughter experiences like any other child.

Last year our wins included a Keith urban concert, movie passes, ROM passes, Casa Loma passes, CNE passes, music downloads, restaurant Gift certificates, and books. All the prizes were small but very useful for this lucky mom.

Contesting for me does not take away from our family life it enhances it. My daughter likes the writing contests…you know the ones where you have to do something to win, as they make her think. Now she hasn’t won one yet but it does get her thinking (one example of this was the Habitat for Humanity writing contest last fall). So some may call us freaks, I will call us smart, wise, and lucky!

Sometimes people think I am a wee bit off my rocker. Why? Because I search out the FREEBIE, the less expensive route. Some people would rather spend more or not fill out that ballot because there thought is you are what you pay for. Well I am the exact opposite in thought. I Love my wins and freebies. For me it has allowed me to try new things, be the first to see a movie, read books before they are released, try new products,  do things and go places without spending a dollar. Does that make me off my rocker? No it makes me smart and lucky…blessed some would say!

For the past number of days I have been following a friend who has been blogging from Africa about Compassion’s work over there. The pictures and videos spoke to my heart and my daughters as well . We see how very lucky we are. How even though by Canadian standards we are considered poor by many we are actually very wealthy by world standards. We made a commitment to sponsor a child…her name is Chelsea and she is now part of our family! For the cost of a can of diet coke or a cup of coffee and a muffin a day you could really help a child and their family become self sufficient… I couldn’t help but think of something that was recently by a very wise man.. “we live in a knowledge based world, and the best way to become self sufficient is through eduction”…so my hats and prayers are with the bloggers who went…they really showed us how blessed and lucky we are! We really are we can contest, blog, eat when we want and have health care to name just a few blessings of Canadian life …I am a lucky cannuck and I want to share what I have been blessed with.

In the March issue of O Magazine there is a great article “5 Things Happy People Do”. It got me thinking you really need to be happy to have the luck..Attitude, happiness joy and luck all go hand in hand. They are the necessities for a winning life so what do happy people do?

1. They find their authentic self- they picture JOY!

2. They design their lives to bring in joy. They plan for joy! They do the things they love to do, things that excite them.

3.They don’t dwell on the “if only”…You know if only I lost the twenty pounds, got the better job, got that certain win then life would be grand thinking. You got to be content and thankful for all you have–it is part in parcel of having real happiness and luck.

4. They take care of their friends..friendship is an important part of life. I know I treasure the time that I get to hang with friends.

5. They allow themselves to be happy! Some people are always thinking I will be happy when I get this project or that done. I love this quote from the article.

“”Some people would say you shouldn’t strive for personal happiness until you’ve taken care of everyone in the world who is starving or doesn’t have adequate medical care,” says Howard Cutler, MD, coauthor with the Dalai Lama of The Art of Happiness in a Troubled World. “The Dalai Lama believes you should pursue both simultaneously. For one thing, there is clear research showing that happy people tend to be more open to helping others. They also make better spouses and parents.” And in one famous study, nuns whose autobiographies expressed positive emotions (such as gratitude and optimism) lived seven to 10-and-a-half years longer than other nuns. So, for any die-hard pessimist who still needs persuading, just think of how much more you can help the world if you allow a little happiness into your life. ”

I really do believe the more happiness that I have in my life equates to the more lucky I am. I can not have luck if I am not at that happy place. One can never be too happy or too lucky ! So here is wishing you happiness and luck!

I think I have an unusual lucky charm…after all don’t most of us have a lucky rabbit’s foot, horseshoe, beetle, or some other object that we attach luck to? Mine is living and breathing and she is 10 years old. Can you guess? My daughter is the luckiest person I know. If she enters a contest i would say her chances of winning are great, especially if we are there in person when the winning ticket is drawn. She has won necklaces, movie passes, barbie gear, puzzles, books, games, magazine subscriptions, craft supplies and her list goes on. For her it is fun but it is her attitude that gets me and makes me check mine-she EXPECTS to win, she enters thinking it is hers and more often then naught she is right. I think her attitude is her lucky charm. Prizes are drawn to her. It has me thinking I need to think it is mine and put down that inanimate object…what do you think? do you have a lucky charm and if so how has it brought you luck? The Lucky Cannuck wants to know!
